Kids love coming to Promontory’s Kid’s Cabin! Its truly a special place for kids to experience life at 7000 feet!

As the airplane begins its decent into the mountain valley of Salt Lake City, you know you’re arriving amongst some of the most majestic mountains in the world. The Wasatch Mountains, known as the western edge of the Rocky Mountains with peaks at just under 12,000 feet offer year round activities for the whole family. On the back side sits Park City is a prime family gathering spot offering skiing, golf, hiking and biking.

Promontory’s private community, located in Park City, Utah uses all of the elements that any family would desire in a second home community. Just an hour from the airport, families can fly in and almost in no time be out on on the trails.

Being able to work with the kids I know is a tremendous opportunity for all of us! and THAT that the Kid’s Cabin is the center of activity at Promontory!

Shayna, a 6 year old New Yorker makes her stop at Promontory’s Kid’s Cabin when the family arrives in town. Where she knows she will get a chance to explore the great outdoors.

Along with two golf courses and equestrian center, Promontory includes a fantastic soccer field, basketball courts and sand volleyball plus an award winning adventure trail equipped with water slide and stream. The view from 7000 feet is a year round adventure indeed!

Fishing is great along with lots of views of wildlife in the area.

Q: “Why can’t we golf when there is frost?

A: It is hard to believe that simply walking across the golf course on a frosty morning can cause so much damage, but in 48 to 72 hours, the proof will be seen as brown or dead footprints. Frost occurs on cold, clear nights when air temperatures are near or below 32 degrees. Frost is actually frozen dew and with our location, elevation and usually cloudless nights, we are prone to have frosty mornings throughout the spring and fall months and even as late as July 3rd. Any activity from walking, driving equipment or mowing the turf will shatter the grass blades and damage the crown (growing point). This type of damage requires as long as an entire season to recuperate or grow back.

Because of the potential damage to the golf course, we also have to wait to begin our morning maintenance, thus delaying the starting times for the golfers. To provide the best playing conditions for our members, I also need time to prepare the courses ahead of play. By keeping a small window open in front of the golfers, we have the time to stay ahead of them.

Can you imagine our greens after the maintenance crew mowed off the frost or foursomes leave hundreds of footprints in the same area? We wouldn’t just have an ugly sight, the playability would be severely reduced. Repairs would be costly and the green would be taken out of play until new turfgrass could be established; which would be weeks.

I have, throughout my career, tried many different practices to help speed up the melting process, but Mother Nature seems to always prevail. We have even used the irrigation system to increase melting from the turf. Because the temperature is usually around freezing, I just end up making more ice, which then takes longer to thaw.

Superintendents do not like frost delays any more than golfers, because it prevents us from performing our maintenance practices. A short delay while the frost melts can preserve the quality of our turfgrass, save needless repairs and give the golfer a little longer to practice their swing.

- Chuck O’Nan, C.G.C.S., Superintendent of Promontory Golf Courses

The 2011 golf season at Promontory will be here before you know it. The mud season is fast approaching and when its time to put the ski’s away, there are many ways to get golf ready.

Whether you book a tee time on Promontory’s Simulator, work out with Rob in the gym, or want to play a round; all are things you can do right now.

The Simulator is available everyday until 5pm, and you can arrange a tee time by calling the golf shop at 333-4218, the concierge at 333-4000, or by contacting one of Promontory’s golf professionals. The simulator offers over 40 different championship courses from all over the world to choose from. You can also choose to practice on the simulated driving range to work on your ball striking.

Rob Smith, Promontory’s athletic director can get you prepared for the golf season through strength training, endurance training, and increasing your flexibility. These are all important elements for not only playing your best golf but feeling great after the round, and most importantly staying injury free. The body goes through a violent action during the golf swing, and it is very important to have strength and flexibility to protect your muscles from injury. Talk to Rob about developing a plan for overall strength with an emphasis on trunk strength and flexibility.

If you are ready to play a round of golf you can schedule a tee time at almost any course right now in Salt Lake City. Just a 30 minute drive can have you on the tee at many public courses for as little as $40 for 18 holes. If you want to play but don’t have anyone to play with, our Promontory golf professionals are always happy to join you. Call the golf shop for help scheduling a tee time or to find someone to play a round with. We can also help find other members who are looking for a game. Promontory members and their guests are also encouraged to join golf professionals Mike Garrison and Tom Rogers in Mesquite, Nevada during masters week for a fun 3 day golf outing. For information or to register: Register by emailing Mike Garrison: mgarrison@promontoryclub.com or register online at: http://info.promontoryclub.com/mesquitegolftrip2011

Enjoy the rest of the ski season, see you on the course!

A few Saturday’s ago girls from the kids group “ripped” up the double blacks at Deer Valley. It was definitely cold outside, but it was fun and the snow was perfect. If you would like to come out and try skiing or snowshoeing, please email me at ssmith@promontoryclub.com.
