Promontory families enjoy a zoo visit!

Because so many raptor birds make their home at Promontory I thought it was a good time for families to learn more about these wonderful birds.  Hogel Zoo came to the Kid’s Cabin and brought in owls and a magpie along with a rosie boa snake as part of their out reach program.  We learned what makes the owl such an amazing raptor bird, how they can fly silently through the night sky listening for their prey.

Promontory Club's - Kid's CabinThe Saw-whet owl is a very small owl that uses stillness to avoid its predators. The Great Horned Owl, often seen at Promontory, is a skilled hunter and one of the most interesting to watch with the tuff of his feathers looking like ears. He blends in with the natural habitat among the trees.  The magpie, a very social bird is not a picky eater and can be seen eating dead animal parts throughout Utah.

Coming up the first week in May the Kid’s Cabin will have chicken eggs hatching.  The baby chicks will then be part of the education program for a week and then will  move to a local ranch where they will become egg layers.

Keep watching this summer as we participate in Hogel Zoo’s Beastly Buddy program and Tracey Aviary’s adoption program.   To learn more about the zoo or aviary or to plan a visit next time you are in town check out these websites!
