Headaches can be caused by so many pain responses from within our body. Headaches result when our muscles tighten, an illness or injury, blood vessels swelling or constricting, which irritate nerve endings located in the head. When nerves are irritated they send the message to the brain triggering a headache pain, because our brain doesn’t have pain sensors, just the nerve endings.

Stress is the most common type of headache. Lack of sleep, feeling pressured to accomplish a task, deadlines, and unrealistic expectations are all factors of stress headaches. Sitting too long stresses the muscle groups in the body that work to hold one position for long periods of time, sitting at a computer for hours is a large cause of headaches. Lack of movement is a huge cause of headaches, so if you are suffering from a tension headache, get up from your desk and take a walk.

Migraines are usually genetic and women suffer from them more than men. Common causes for a migraine headache are: chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Other causes are: dehydration, sudden noises, bright lights, and changes in the weather.

Glass of WaterTo relieve a headache there are a few different options.

  • The fastest cure is an over-the-counter pain reliever.
  • Many physicians believe the real relief comes from drinking the water to swallow the pain relievers, as most people are dehydrated.
  • Stretching and massaging are alternative ways to relieve a headache. Stretching allows movement in the area while massage encourages the muscles to relax, tension to release, and allows circulation into the brain.
