Do you feel like you’re stuck indoors to ride because of the snow outside?
Think again!
Riding outside in the winter is a great way to keep your horse fit and interested in his work. Even a quick spin around the barn on a cleared path is an easy way to give your horse a change of scenery, especially if your winter season is as long as it is in Park City!
Here are a few tips to make winter riding a fun and SAFE experience:
- Avoid ice patches and use snow pads, borium shoes, studs and/or bare feet to avoid slipping.
- Ride in the deep snow as well! The depth of the snow helps condition your horses’ legs just like the sand of a beach might.
- Ride on trails and in areas you know well from the dry season to avoid stepping on something that could hurt your horse.
- The best snow days are those when the snow is a little packed, but soft enough for the horses’ hooves to break through.
- If the air is cold, as it is on a clear day in the mountains, be sure to add a ¼ sheet or cooler to your horse so they don’t get chilled.
- After a ride outside, be sure to cool your horse properly so they don’t get chilled, which can lead to muscle soreness, flu, and sometimes colic.
- Dress warm, especially with good boots and gloves.
Have fun!
